I’ll start this off by saying I am 100% Type A. Monica Geller is my spirit animal…no joke. If you haven’t watched Friends…I’m sorry but your totally missing out. I’ll admit I only recently started binge-watching the series on Netflix and had to slow down because I don’t want it to ever end. Anyway, let’s get back on track here…
I have an obsession with being organized and tidy. If something is out of place it bugs me to no end. I’ve always been this way and it just keeps my head clear knowing where all of my stuff is. When I was younger I would organize my friend’s closets and help them go through their clothes to get rid of what they didn’t wear….let’s be real, I still do this now. Haha!
My current closet-situation. Yikes. Not the best setup if we are being honest. Unfortunately, I still live at home with my parents and space has become such an issue for me and my shopping addiction. I would like to consider myself a minimalist, but the amount of clothes and shoes I have acquired over the past few years would have any serious lifestyle minimalist laughing. My rule when shopping is to try and buy things that will always be in style and also act as wardrobe staples. Even though I have too much stuff for the amount of space I have, the majority of my clothes are awesome basics that I can wear with a bunch of different things throughout the year. Another fact about me is I don’t wear much color…like at all. This is great because almost everything I have works well together in an outfit. I’m never that person tearing through my closet in the morning trying to find a matching colored item because everything is pretty much in greyscale. I know…I live a sad, colorless (but definitely efficient) life. Black is my happy color.
I recently renovated my closet and was waiting to write this post for quite some time now. My closet is one of those single-door styles where its impossible to see what you have on the far ends and anything you have back there is forever forgotten and never worn again. Who else has this type of closet?? It’s the worst. I needed to change the orientation of the shelves and rods to get more storage for the same amount of space. This was a very difficult task and nearly impossible for my dad and I to figure out. We found this awesome closet organization system at Home Depot that did the trick. I can link it below if anyone is interested. First, you buy the starter kit which is the main shelving unit. Then you can purchase additional rods, drawers, cabinets, etc to fit your custom closet needs. I didn’t need much more than a few shelves because my closet was so small to begin with. Here is what I ended up with:
All of my jeans and sweaters are now folded down and 100% visible when I open the closet door. I keep my blazers, pants and skirts on the top right side. My dresses, vests and longer things are hanging below it. On the left side I keep all of my blouses. Tank tops and short sleeves are on the top rod, and long sleeve tees and button-down shirts are on the bottom. Anything miscellaneous that I don’t use often such as travel and beach bags are stored at the very top of my closet.
I have all of my underwear, sports bras, socks, leggings and pj’s in this cube organizer I got at Lowe’s. I’ll link it at the bottom as well. This also doubles as my TV and laptop stand. The rest of my casual sweatshirts and sweatpants all are stored in my dresser drawers. This part is not that interesting so I’ll keep it short and sweet.
Last but definitely not least…the shoes. I actually bought three cube storage systems and attached them all together to make up my shoe wall. I keep flats and heels in the bottom section and the boots on the top. Usually most people would keep boots and larger items on the bottom, but the amount of stuff on the bottom was way too heavy to mount on the wall at the top. I’m going to link both of the shoe cube pieces below. Some of my nicer, more expensive shoes I keep in the boxes stacked on the top. The reason I do this is to prevent color fade from the constant sunlight. This will also dry out the leather over time and ruin your shoes.
I hope you guys enjoyed this post! I’ve always loved the idea of taking on a side project organizing other people’s closets and houses. Maybe in the near future I’ll make this idea reality and I’ll be organizing all of your closets?! What do you think?
