As most of you already know, I’ve partnered with the company Material World. I know…I feel like I’m always talking about it too. They are not paying me to say any of this (nor are they sponsoring this post). I truly love the entire concept and everything they stand for. Why buy everything new, when we can keep great pieces in circulation and give them a second life? The quality of the product is excellent, and you get to open your box not knowing what’s inside! That’s my favorite part. 🙂
For anyone who is new to the blog and wants to learn more about Material World and how to sign up, scroll to the bottom of my homepage under the Current Collabs section. I’ll also link the signup page here and at the bottom of this post too.
A little while back I posted on InstaStories talking about the items I received in my box that month. I used the poll feature and asked you guys to vote and help me decide what to keep. I usually agree with the results of my polls, and was shocked when most of you said to return the beautiful vintage Chloé jacket I’m wearing in these pictures. WHAT!?! It was actually one of my favorite pieces in the box! After some debating I finally decided to keep it because I saw potential in the piece. I love that it’s pretty much a one-of-a-kind, I don’t have anything like it, and it’s cute as a jacket or a blazer! Oh, and the balloon sleeves are too cute!!
So why am I writing this post? Well, I wanted to talk about how I think when shopping. Yes. You read that right…how my brain works. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard from people “I need a new wardrobe” or “My outfits are never as cute as I imagined like on Pinterest & Instagram…”. My answer to that is a lot of people can’t visualize the potential of a single piece (i.e. my Chloé jacket). Then you fall victim to the “expectation vs. reality” Pinterest-outfit fail. Haha, sorry but its true! When looking at an item most of us think “OMG I love this!” or “ew, I hate it”. The problem with that mindset is you’re obviously not wearing this by itself. You’ll eventually be pairing it with pants, shoes, a jacket…etc. So maybe that top isn’t your favorite, but with those awesome pants it looks amazing as a whole look. Do you get what I’m saying?
A lot of people believe I have this gigantic closet filled with so many trendy things because I always “look cute”. Well, if you read my earlier post about how I organize my clothes and shoes, you would know I really don’t have a big closet. I just taught myself to shop more strategically. I only buy things that are different from what I already have, and don’t compete with anything else.
For example: Because I have a pair of flat, black ankle booties that I absolutely love, I’m not going to buy another pair of booties that can be worn in replacement of those. Instead of booties, maybe I’ll go for a tall, flat boot because I don’t have anything like this.
By keeping this mindset, it will help you build [and maintain] a closet of core staples that can be mixed and matched to create those awesome outfits you see on Instagram. Also remember to keep the entire outfit in mind when shopping. Not every item you put on will be your favorite…you have to get past that. Once you build a good foundation of staples, it’s so simple to create outfits. All you need is one WOW piece to make any outfit go from everyday to Instagram-worthy!
I’m wearing my Chloé jacket here with all-black and one of my favorite pairs of heels. I threw on a scarf, some sunglasses and a small bag. This look is mainly composed of basics, and is far from “basic”. 🙂
