So I’m all about making life simple, especially when it comes down to getting dressed everyday. I can’t stress how important it is to identify what your wardrobe essentials are before expanding your collection. Depending on your lifestyle this may slightly vary, but I’m here to help guide you in the right direction. So without further adieu, let’s talk about the #1 thing everyone needs in their closet: The Plain White T-Shirt.
. . . but are you even surprised?
A plain white t-shirt is such an important piece to have in your wardrobe! Not only does it match with EVERYTHING, but it can be the base to a great layered look, or serve as your go-to when you need an outfit quick without thinking. I personally love a basic white tee and jeans look. It’s casual, chic and so easy to throw on when you just “don’t know”.
Since we’re putting so much emphasis on such a basic item, you want to make sure you’re choosing the right fit + quality too. I’m sorry, but the t-shirt you wear to yoga is not going to cut it. Go out and find yourself a well-fitting option that you feel great in. I like wearing my t-shirts oversized, but that’s just my personal preference.
Here’s a Tip: Go and try on options in the store [. . . yes you have to leave your couch] wearing your favorite pairs of jeans. I can’t tell you how many times I end up at the mall in yoga pants and then have to “imagine” what the outfit will look like. Trust me, this is a game changer.
Things I look for in a Plain White T-Shirt:
- An oversized, lived-in fit. Not too big though, or it looks messy.
- The length. I usually wear high-waist denim so its not a huge deal for me, but make sure you have enough length for that perfect half-tuck!
- Material + Feel. My favorite t-shirts are soft and drapey, not to heavy and thick.
- The neckline. I personally prefer a deep-V or a VERY wide scoop neck so I can show off necklaces, a bralette strap, etc.
- Sheer-ness. This is definitely not a word. Haha! I don’t mind a semi-sheer t-shirt, but make sure it not too see-through.
Some Plain White T-Shirt Tips:
- NEVER put it in the dryer . . . like ever. Your perfectly oversized tee will never be the same again. Take it from experience.
- If the t-shirt is semi-sheer, ONLY wear it with a black bra/bralette. Anything else is just tacky.
- Hang them in your closet, don’t fold. Folding t-shirts is such a waste of time IMO because it just creates wrinkles. This brings me to my next tip:
- ALWAYS, ALWAYS steam or iron your t-shirts! I can’t stress this enough!! You don’t want to look like you just rolled out of bed.
The part you’ve been waiting for . . .
Of course you want to know where to get this perfect plain white t-shirt . . . am I right? I’ve talked about this briefly in “The 10 Pieces Every Woman Needs in her Closet”, but my current favorite places to shop for oversized tees are:
- Zara. I love this fit and have it in many colors! The white is definitely more sheer so be aware of that.
- Aritzia. I’m obsessed with this V-neck, which is actually a bit more oversized in person. I also love this wide scoop neck style too! Definitely more oversized and the length is great!
- H&M has so many options of basics at affordable prices! I love this V-neck because the back is longer than the front. Perfect for tucking the front!
- Free People is a great place to find those perfect “worn-in” pieces. This tee is on my shopping list. Love the sleeve length and the pocket!
I really hope you are inspired to find the perfect white t-shirt for your forever wardrobes! One thing to keep in mind is white t-shirts will become faded and dull over time, so make sure to replace them once they start looking dingy.

You’re so right. A good quality one too as I hate when they look dingy or thin.
