I get stopped all the time about my hair. It happens multiple times a week on the street, while I’m shopping in a store, pretty much everywhere and anywhere. The questions I get asked most are “What hair color do you have?” “Who does your hair?” and “How often do you need to get it done to stay that bright?” I can only thank one person for giving me my signature hair color, and she happens to be my very own sister, Jenn.
Having a sister who doubles as your hair colorist + stylist definitely has it’s perks. For one, she can literally do my single process in our kitchen while I’m sitting in my PJ’s and working at the same time…haha! On the other hand, she books up fast and I have to get it done very frequently [more to come on that].
I sat down with Jenn and asked her a bunch of questions you guys requested about hair color. Here is the interview:
For anyone who does not know you, what’s your name + where do you work?
My name is Jennifer Russo, owner of JayR Studio located in East Meadow, New York.
Would you consider yourself more of a stylist or colorist?
Colorist. I feel it’s more creative. I like the artistic side of color and the chemistry behind it.
What is the secret to keeping colored-treated hair bright and vibrant?
Use salon brand shampoo! I’m not a hair snob, but grocery + drugstore brand shampoo is pretty much the equivalent to putting dish soap on your hair. It is the WORST thing for salon color-treated hair. Why spend all this money to get your hair done professionally, to just ruin it in one wash? You get what you pay for…so if you want your color to last, invest in products that will help maintain it.
How often should you get your hair colored?
Every 4-6 weeks for a single process, and 6-8 weeks for highlight + balayage touchups.
*FYI guys: I get my hair colored by Jenn every 4-6 weeks on the dot, or until I begin to see my natural hair color root coming in. We use permanent dye on my roots, and semi-permanent on the rest of my head. Basically my roots will grow out, and the bright red will fade and become dingy over time with washes.
What color line do you recommend/use the most?
Goldwell. They always have the newest technology and truly care for the integrity of the hair and how to improve it. Goldwell Elumen is best for fashion colors.
Best shampoo/conditioner brand for color-treated hair?
Kerastase’s Reflection line is the best, but a more affordable option would be Redken.

If you could give someone one tip overall regarding salon color-treated hair, what would it be?
If you want long-lasting results, don’t cheap out. Treat your hair the best you can and it will last.
What services do you offer in your salon? Do you do anything else other than color?
Yes! I offer color, haircuts, styling/blowouts, keratin/Brazilian treatments, American Wave curl treatments, facial waxing, hair extensions, makeup, and my newest addition is Eyelash Extensions!
